There are different types of Phurba as well. Normally, if there are three faces or one face on the Phurba, this would not be a Phurba for “hand holding” for ritual purposes. Normally with faces, they are placed on an altar as an object of devotion. In some ceremonies, such as a “blessing” a Lama may hold the Phurba, but normally the face is covered symbolically with cloth in this case.
 
“Activity” Phurbas on the other hand, which appear in various forms and metals, usually have no face, and are used ritually. The three types of Phurba (in general) are:
Recitation phurba: Support for Vajrakilaya or Hayagriva practice, to be kept on the shrine
Activity phurba: For performing various activities during development stage practice, e.g. liberation offering during feast (tsok) offerings.
Protection: For carrying around to protect oneself from harmful obstacles
